The first post

“Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions” or “in your word” — Psalm 119:18 in the New Living Translation.

Why start yet another blog?

Someone asked me earlier this year if I knew any plans to read the whole Bible in one year. This led to an article in our church magazine, which led to another, and grew into a third. But what to do with these articles? So, a blog seems as good a place to put them as any. Plenty of people write about Bible reading, but this is an attempt to bring some stuff together which I hope will be useful to other people.

Here’s a quote I found somewhere and wrote into an old Bible of mine. Old-fashioned perhaps, but worth saying:

This book contains: the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners and the hope of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its stories are true and its decisions are immutable. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveller’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s comass, the soldier’s sword and the Christian’s charter. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gate of Hell disclosed. God in Christ, the grand object.

It should fill all the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, a river of pleasure. It is given to you in life, will be opened at the judgement, and be remebered forever. It involves the highest responsibilitiy, will reward the labourer, and condemn all those who trifle with its contents.

  1. Hello, Alison!

It is an honor to post the first (as far as I know) response on your new blog. I look forward to checking in, and gaining new insight into the amazing Word of God. Learning to understand His Word is a journey I find incredibly challenging, and I welcome your input.

I’ve enjoyed News from Farholme for a couple of years now, and look forward to connecting with another member of the Walley family from time to time.

    God bless, and take care.

    Terry
